PROBLEM
The existing MapLarge interface was functional but visually outdated and inconsistent.
Key issues included:
Overly dense dashboards with limited hierarchy.
Inconsistent design patterns and UI components.
Visual branding not aligned with enterprise-level positioning.
Poor scalability of UI for future features and modules.
These issues impacted both customer acquisition (website) and day-to-day usability (dashboard), making it harder for users to leverage the platform’s full capabilities.

Original Website Design
GOALS
Redesign the dashboard UI to make complex geospatial data easier to interpret and navigate.
Audit and improve the information architecture for the marketing site to clarify content organization.
Build the foundation for a scalable design system to unify the look and feel across product and marketing.
Elevate brand perception with a polished, trustworthy, and modern visual language.
Streamline collaboration between design and development to enable faster, more consistent future releases.
PROCESS
STEP 1 _ Discovery & Audit
Performed a comprehensive UI and UX audit, mapping out visual inconsistencies and friction points.
Reviewed and restructured the information architecture, clarifying content groupings for marketing navigation.
Benchmarked against competitor geospatial platforms to inform modern visualization patterns and enterprise messaging.
Collected feedback from product and engineering teams on pain points and scalability challenges.

Information Architecture
A refined, structured IA was implemented to improve user comprehension and flow.

Main Navigation
Redesigned the main navigation to align with the updated information architecture, improving clarity and wayfinding across the platform.
STEP 2 _ Design Exploration
Redesigned dashboards that clarified hierarchy and made data visualization more approachable.
Developed visual design explorations: color palettes, typography, iconography, and data visualization styles.
Designed custom 3D illustrations for the marketing site to add visual depth, communicate complex technology in a more relatable way, and differentiate MapLarge from competitors.

Dashboard Screen Sizes
Designed a fully responsive dashboard with a unified visual system, updated side navigation icons, and a flexible layout that adapts seamlessly to any screen size.

Dashboard Mockup
Provided developers with detailed dashboard mockups, complete with hover states, interaction specs, and build notes.

Dashboard Workflow
Refined dashboard workflows with updated icons, colors, menus, and card layouts to align with the visual language of the redesigned website.

Icons
Designed and delivered a full library of hundreds of SVG icons for the dashboard, ensuring a cohesive experience and visual alignment with the redesigned website. Worked closely with developers to confirm each icon accurately represented its action and was exported in the correct format for seamless integration into the back-end system.

Date Picker
Designed a custom date picker for the dashboard, detailing every interaction and iteration with clear annotations to guide the development team through implementation.
STEP 3 _ Design System Foundations
Built the first version of a component library for key UI elements (icons, filters, navigation).
Documented spacing, grid systems, typography, and color use to guide future development.

Component Library
Created a starter component library to give developers a clear visual reference and foundation for future product work.
STEP 4 _ Collaboration & Handoff
Worked closely with developers to ensure the new dashboard and marketing site were implementable and scalable.
Delivered high-fidelity assets, 3D renders, and documentation to support implementation.
Iterated based on stakeholder reviews and early internal feedback before final delivery.

RESULTS
Reorganized the information architecture, making it easier for users to locate key product capabilities and site content.
Introduced custom 3D illustrations that elevated MapLarge’s brand and simplified technical concepts for new visitors.
Redesigned the marketing site with clearer messaging, modern visuals, and a stronger enterprise presence.
Established the foundation of a design system, enabling more consistent future feature development.

REFLECTION
This project taught me how to balance visual design excellence with the complex needs of data-heavy enterprise software. Building the first version of a design system in parallel with product and marketing work improved my ability to create scalable solutions that last. It also reinforced the value of close collaboration with engineering to ensure design ambition aligns with technical feasibility.
